Powersystems Energise Sandscale Park Helipad
Powersystems your high voltage (HV) specialist partners – Are proud to announce that we have successfully completed the energisation of the Orsted, Sandscale Park Helipad, 11 kV substation.
The substation has a looped supply which gives maximum import capacity of 250 kVA and has all been adopted by ENWL.
The heliport base in Barrow-in-Furness, has been constructed to support helicopters travelling to and from the Walney Extension off-shore wind farm project.
Name of Client and Location: Jones Bros on behalf of Orsted
Project Value: £1.8 M
Duration of the Project: 16 Weeks
Services: Electrical Infrastructure
The Sandscale Park helipad is being built on the former site of Partylite candle manufacturers off Park Road, Barrow.
Energy company Ørsted, formerly Dong Energy, is developing the site, described as a “major aviation investment in the county”, alongside the Furness Economic Development Forum (FEDF).
The heliport will allow further development and maintenance to be carried out and will allow the wind farms to be serviced by helicopter.
Sandscale Park Helipad is a further development for the Furness economy and will result in new jobs for the area.
The development will include a helipad, flight operations building, car park, refuelling facilities and a generator.
It will allow quick and easy access to offshore wind farms for emergency repairs and services.
Powerystems partnerships:
Walney Extension, located in the Irish Sea, became the world’s largest offshore wind farm when it officially opened earlier this year. The helipad project was led by Jones Bros on behalf of Ørsted, who specialise in offshore wind internationally The Walney Extension is capable of providing clean electricity to almost 600,000 UK homes
The project is the latest Jones Bros has undertaken for Ørsted, as the civil engineering firm completed the construction of operations and maintenance facilities for the energy giant in October 2017.
The helicopter base features an aviation fuelling system with a 15,000 litre storage tank, with Jones Bros’ team installing the pipes used to fuel the aircraft.
The team is also installing modular welfare units for staff working on the site, which is situated on a former candle factory.
Garod Evans, contracts director at Jones Bros, said: “We’re pleased to continue our relationship with Ørsted through this exciting project.
“The base will be vital for the Walney Extension offshore wind farm to transfer personnel to and from the site.
Walney Extension -The world´s largest offshore wind farm
Walney Extension offshore wind farm is located approx. 19km west of Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria, off the North-West coast of England.
Situated next to the existing Walney and West of Duddon Sands Offshore Wind Farms, Walney Extension is made up of 87 turbines and has a total capacity of 659 MW, enough to power almost 600,000 homes in the UK.
